Fact:
Typical diets in the U.S. fall short of the recommended amounts of whole grains, beans, legumes, and low-fat or nonfat dairy and contain more than the recommended amounts of meat, sodium, saturated fats, refined grains, partially hydrogenated fats, and added sugar.
Additionally, many Americans lack proper nutrition and access to healthy foods regularly, which is alarming to our federal government and should be of grave concern to insurers. According to the Biden-Harris Administration National Strategy On Hunger, Nutrition, And Health, which has been exploring the issue of obesity and diet-related diseases, diet-related diseases are some of the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. This is the fundamental driver behind the strategy’s focus to integrate nutrition and health—through medically tailored meals and other measures—to optimize Americans’ well-being and reduce healthcare costs.
The Administration’s 2022 report announced the goal of ending hunger and increasing healthy eating and physical activity by 2030, so fewer Americans experience diet-related diseases while reducing related health disparities.
Regarding those healthcare costs, the CDC states that nearly $173 billion a year is spent on healthcare for obesity alone. A recent article in Forbes reported that the total estimated medical costs in 2022 for diabetes were $412.9 billion and for hypertension, it was estimated that the U.S. spends $131 to $198 billion each year.
